What Counts as Yours, and What Does Not

The checker looks for five things, and it is deliberately blunt about all of them. A name used mid-sentence. A number. Something they actually said, in their words. A time or a place. A concrete object rather than a feeling. A sentence carrying two of those is marked as looking specific, unless most of it matched a stock phrase. A sentence carrying none is marked interchangeable, however warmly it is written.

That is a crude test and it is deliberately crude, but do not mistake it for more than it is. It matches word lists and punctuation. It does not know what a name is, only what one looks like, so a capitalised word in the wrong place will fool it. It cannot tell whether your message is good, and it cannot really tell whether it is true. What it is decent at is noticing when nothing in a sentence would change if you sent it to somebody else, which is the thing people miss about their own writing: a card can be entirely heartfelt and entirely interchangeable at the same time.

The case it exists for

Happy birthday Sarah. It has a name in it, so it feels personalised, and it is scored as anybody's. Take Sarah out and put any other name in and the sentence is untouched. That is the test: not whether a detail is present, but whether removing it would change anything.

Why This Page Replaced Seven

Until today this site had a separate page for a birthday message for a wife, a girlfriend, a best friend, a boyfriend, a husband, a mother and a sister. Seven pages, seven builders, one idea. We wrote them because people search that way, which is true, and we kept them because each ranked for its own phrase, which turned out not to be true at all: three weeks after publishing, Google had crawled the homepage and six other pages, and had not opened any of the seven.

The honest reading of that is not that Google made a mistake. Seven pages that differ by one noun are one page with a dropdown, and a search engine reading them in sequence is entitled to notice. So they are now one page, and the redirects are permanent.

What made the merge easy to argue for is that it is the same claim the checker makes. If the relationship were really the variable, the seven pages would have needed to exist and would have needed to say different things. They did not. They said the same things with a different noun at the top, which is exactly what a card does when it fails.

What should I write in a birthday card?

One thing they do that nobody else does, in the first sentence, before any greeting. Everything people usually reach for first, the greeting, the wish for a wonderful day, the year that has gone by, is writing that works on anybody, which is another way of saying it does not work on them. Paste a draft above and the checker flags the sentences that look interchangeable under its rules.

Does it matter who the card is for?

Less than you would think, and that is the finding this page is built on. Across the seven pages this replaced, the drafts people needed help with failed the same way whoever they were for: they were made of sentences anyone could have written. What changes between them is register, not substance. So the tool above does not ask who it is for. It asks what you were going to say.

How long should a birthday card message be?

Short enough that the specific part is not buried. Two sentences carrying one real detail beat six sentences of warmth. If you have written six and only one of them names something real, the checker will point at the difference, and the rest can probably go.

What if I cannot think of anything specific?

Then answer a narrower question instead of a wider one. Not what they mean to you, which is unanswerable, but what they said last time you saw them, or what they do that you would recognise from across a room. Specific is easier than sincere, and it reads as more sincere.

Is it bad to write happy birthday at all?

No. A greeting is a greeting and it costs you nothing. The checker marks it as interchangeable because it is, not because it is wrong. The question is what sits after it.

Can I have the message written for me instead?

You can, and it will still need the same thing from you. The generators on this site build a message around a detail you supply, and when you supply nothing specific they arrange words around nothing. That is why this page checks rather than generates.

How the Score Is Worked Out

Each sentence is scored on its own, then averaged: an interchangeable sentence counts as one, a partly specific one as a half, a specific one as nothing. The percentage is how much of the message would survive being sent to someone else, so lower is better. The list of printed-card phrases it matches against is a fixed list of twenty-five, written out in the source rather than inferred, and it is matched longest-first so a phrase inside another phrase is not counted twice. Under six words it declines to score at all rather than guess.

Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The scoring runs in your browser, which is why there is no button to press.
